How Big Do Persian Cats Get?

big persian cat

When looking for a breed of cat to buy size is often very important, sometimes a cat may be too large for your house or apartment and this often affects which breed of cat someone might buy.

The size of a cat is part of its identity and certain breeds can be substantially larger than others.

How Big is a Persian Cat?

The Persian cat’s looks are deceptive with their long flowing coats they look a lot bigger than they actually are. They give off the appearance of a large cat.

The Persian is what I would call a medium to large cat, it certainly isn’t as big as say a Maine Coon but it’s larger than your average domestic cat.

I know when I was looking to buy a Persian cat I was wondering what size a Persian cat is. I knew that they had long fur and some look very big when their fur is very long.

A healthy adult male Persian cat will weigh between 9-13 lbs (4kg-6kg).

A healthy female Persian cat will weigh between 7-10 lbs (3.2kg-4.5kg).

Purina lists males weighing 9 to 14 pounds (4kg-6.3kg) and females weighing 7 to 11 pounds (3.2kg-4.9kg).

It’s worth noting that you can always get bigger and smaller cats of the same breed. My own Persian cat Milo is on the larger side and the last time he was weighed at the vets he weighed 5.5kg (12 lbs).

Persians have relatively short legs but they have a stocky body which makes them good climbers. It’s surprising how good a Persian cat is at climbing, they can also jump quite high. Looking at them they look like a glamour cat that’s all for show but that isn’t the case with the Persians that I’ve known they are happy to challenge themselves and scale fences if given the chance!

The Persian cat isn’t fully grown until around 18month- 2 years old. This is when they start to fill out a bit.

What is It Like Living With a Cat The Size of The Persian?

Generally speaking, a larger cat will require a larger space to live in. If you live in a very small studio apartment then a larger cat might not be ideal.

The good news is although the Persian cat is a medium to large breed of cat it is quite happy to reside in a house or apartment. It’s perfectly at home and comfortable in this environment.

Persian cats are best kept as house cats, I recently wrote an article Can Persian Cats Go Outside?

Although the size of a Persian cat won’t cause you any issues just the same as a domestic cat wouldn’t but boredom cat be an issue.

Persian cats spend their time indoors, unlike the domestic cat that goes out for a wander when they’re bored. The Persian will be in your house all the time. Unless, of course, you have a garden then you can let them out under supervision. When a Persian gets bored they might start running up and down your house or meowing a lot and this can be undesirable behaviour.

It’s important to interact with your cat and play with them for at least 30 minutes per day. By doing this you will find that your Persian friend is perfectly comfortable in your home.

How big is your Persian cat? Let me know in the comments below, I’d be interested to know.

  1. I have a beautiful all white female Persian cat born on 4/4/22. She weighed in an 4.5 lbs just yesterday at the vet. Based on your experience will she tend to be on heavier or lighter side of the spectrum?
