Persian Cat vs. Maine Coon

Persian Cat Vs Maine Coon

Before adopting a cat, it is important to compare a few different breeds. This will help you pick the perfect pet for you.

We’ve previously compared Persian Cats and Exotic Shorthairs. But in this post, we are looking at the differences between Persian Cats and Maine Coons. While these are both popular breeds, they have many unique personalities, appearance, and health traits.

By the end of this post, we hope you have a better understanding of these two breeds. Hopefully, this will help as you decide what type of cat is best for you.

What is a Maine Coon?

Maine Coons are one of the largest domestic cat breeds. These creatures are known for their oversized paws and long-hair. Unlike other breeds, Maine Coons can take 3-5 years to reach their full size (most cats reach this in a year).

The Maine Coon is a natural breed that originated in the American state of Maine (it is actually Maine’s official state cat). Over time, their coats and paws adapted to the cold and harsh climate of the North East.

Just like Persians Cats, the Maine Coon is one of the most popular domestic cat breeds. Maine Coons are known for their playful and loyal personality. Although they are not lap-cats, they are easy to train and are often considered the “dogs of the cat world.”

Maine Coon Life Expectancy

Maine Coons are an overall healthy breed. On average, they live for 10-12.5 years. But some Maine Coons have been known to live up to 15 years.

This is similar to Persian Cats, who can live anywhere from 12-17 years. (But be aware, there have been a few Persian Cats who have lived to be 20 years old.)

Maine Coon Personality

Despite their size, Maine Coon cats are very sweet and calm. In fact, they are often called “Gentle Giants.”

This breed is known for being very playful. They need plenty of space to exercise. They like to run and play with toys. Due to their size, they can be loud when they run.

The Maine Coon is also a very loyal breed. They are called the “dogs of the cat world” because they are very committed to their owners.

If you plan to move often, consider adopting a Maine Coon. They are very adaptable to new environments. They can also easily get along with other pets and children.

This is also an intelligent breed. It is even possible to train Maine Coons to perform simple tricks, like sitting, giving a “high-five”, or walking on a leash.

Although Maine Coons are not lap-kitties, they are very sweet and loyal. Their playful and loving attitude makes them a very popular pet.

Maine Coon Health Issues

Maine Coons are known as a healthy breed. But, unfortunately, they can still face a variety of health issues.

Some of the main health issues Maine Coons face include:

  • Hip Dysplasia- Hip dysplasia is more common in dogs, but Maine Coons sometimes have the genetic traits that cause them to experience this condition. Hip dysplasia is an inherited issue that affects the hip socket. This can lead to crippling or difficulty walking. Although this can cause severe pain, it is not fatal.
  • HCM (Feline Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy) – This is a heart condition that affects many cat breeds. It especially affects older Maine Coon cats. HCM causes the heart wall to thicken. This genetic condition is sadly very fatal.
  • SMA (Spinal Muscular Atrophy) – This is a genetic condition that affects the muscles surrounding the spine. Although this is not fatal, it can cause muscular issues. Signs are noticeable at an early age.
  • PKD (Polycystic Kidney Disease)- Both Persian Cats and Maine Coons are prone to PKD. This is a genetic condition that causes cysts to form in the kidneys.
  • Obesity- Maine Coon cats need a lot of exercise. If they don’t get enough exercise, they can become overweight. Sometimes, their large size can make it challenging to know if they are at a healthy weight.

Maine Coon vs Persian Cat

Maine Coon and Persian Cats are both very popular breeds. These cats make wonderful pets for many households.

Maine Coon cats are larger than Persian Cats. Unlike Persian Cats, they don’t have a flat face. So, Maine Coon cats don’t have difficulty breathing. They also don’t need the intense amount of grooming that Persian Cats require. But, both have long coats and require daily brushings.

Maine Coon cats are more adaptable to new environments than Persian Cats. Also, Maine Coon cats have a thick coat and large paws that are perfect for cold climates.

Benefits of a Maine Coon

There are many benefits to owning a Maine Coon cat. This beautiful breed has a long and luxurious coat, which requires regular brushing. But, you don’t have to clean a Maine Coon cat’s eyes (like you would for a Persian Cat).

Maine Coon cats are intelligent, curious, and loyal. They can be trained and are very playful. Many owners enjoy the companionship of Maine Coon cats.

Overall, Maine Coon cats are a healthy breed. Of course, there are a few health issues to know about. But compared to other breeds, Maine Coons are one of the healthiest domestic cat breeds.

What is Best For You?

Ultimately, you need to decide what cat breed is right for you.

There are many benefits to both Maine Coons and Persian Cats. Both are very popular domestic cat breeds.

If you want a playful, dog-like cat, the Maine Coon might be perfect for you. This breed is loyal and very smart.

But, if you want a quiet and mellow cat, consider a Persian. These creatures don’t like change and prefer a familiar environment.

Both Maine Coons and Persians work well with children and other pets. So, really, the choice is yours. You get to decide which pet is the best for your household.
