Is my Persian Tabby Mix likely to have health issues?
Persians are prone to polycystic kidney disease, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which are both hereditary diseases and brachycephalic airway obstruction syndrome which is not.
As an inherited disease, polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is one of the Persian cats’ most common health concerns. Cysts are tiny, fluid-filled sacs that develop in the kidneys of cats with this disease. Cysts interfere with the kidney’s normal function as they grow. As a result, kidney failure eventually occurs. A blood test can identify the specific gene that causes PKD in Persians. Unfortunately, there is no cure for PKD. As long as possible, cats are treated to maintain their health by supporting their kidneys.
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is also a concern among Persians. This condition causes cats to have abnormally thick heart walls, which slow blood flow. This condition is more common in purebred cats, including Persians. It may take years for Persian cats with HCM to show symptoms. It is only when decreased blood circulation leads to other issues, such as heart failure, that symptoms appear. In this regard, whether or not a cat has developed symptoms usually determines whether treatment will be successful.
Persian cats are prone to brachycephalic airway obstruction syndrome or BAOS as it’s known. They are unable to breathe normally because animals with flat faces have abnormally short skull bones, altering their face shape. They also tend to have dental issues as well.

Breeders usually have more expensive show-quality cats. They also sell pet quality cats that cost less because they are sold for pets and companions rather than for competition. Animal shelters or rescues may have Persians available. The fees at these places can save you a lot of money. It just depends on what you want.

Persians and Persian Tabbies are usually calm and gentle. This make it much easier to care for them if they’re sick. Feral cats are usually suspicious and violent.
As a mother of three feral cats taken off the streets, I know how stressing and difficult it is to take a cat to the vet when she’s acting like a man eating tiger, and to force her to swallow a pill when you almost lose a finger while doing it.
I had a Persian cat once, and she was gentle. I always managed to take care of her without getting hurt. The more trusting a cat is, the less likely they are to fight.
